Frequently Asked Questions

What happens at my first appointment?

At our first appointment, we will discuss what concerns or problems brought you to seek Counselling. I will ask you questions regarding the history of your issue and together we will put in place a plan of action that is tailored to your needs.

For couples seeking Counselling, I meet with both of you and together we explore your history and your concerns. The goal is to identify the negative interactive patterns that cause conflict in your relationship. Together we look for ways to breakdown in small bites what causes the conflict and tension so we can open pathways to more positive communication and harmony in your relationship.

When I meet with families, I prefer meeting with all the family members for the first session. The goal is for me to hear everyone share their thoughts and point of view. That way each one has a voice and it allows me to observe the family dynamics. From what I glean in that first session I will communicate what I feel is a workable plan of action for everyone concerned.

When parents feel their child need Counselling I meet with the parents alone first. We will then discuss your child’s issues, family life, school performance, and social life. I will want to hear what you have tried, how your family has been affected, and your family history. At the end of the session, I will provide you with some preliminary feedback and suggestions. Future appointments are usually with your child alone unless your child prefers the presence of his parents. Communication between myself and the parents occurs outside of your child’s sessions.

When Counselling adolescents, less communication between the therapist and parents will occur, as it's important for me to build trust and respect with your adolescent. Your teen may choose to invite you into their session. If I feel your child is at risk I will notify you. At the beginning of my first session with you teen I will share with your teen the boundaries and limitations to confidentially in Counselling.

  • Families, first session might require 90 minutes, remaining sessions 45 to 60 minutes

How often and for how many sessions does one go to Counselling?

Depending on the issues we will be working on, I generally see clients once a week or if you chose Online Counselling I answer your email messages once a week. However, there are times when more or less sessions are needed so I evaluate the need with you and adjust our sessions frequency accordingly. The duration of your therapy with me depends on your goals, the complexity of the issues, and the progress gained after each session. Each situation is unique and there are no set patterns. Sometimes people do take a break from Counselling and then return again at a later date.
